Legal Question in Personal Injury in New York

Our son was injured during his bowling league and fractured his thumb and lacerated his entire thumb to the bone. We believe he may have cut it on the bumpers that were below the gutter since his had slipped and landed in the gutter, but being in shock, we aren't exactly sure how he got hurt, but it wouldn't have happened simply by falling down. I'd like to know how to handle the situation with the alley and if we have any legal recourse; at the very least make sure their insurance pays the medical bills. Please advise. Thank you.
