Legal Question in Personal Injury in New York

My son was the victim of a speeding car.

He was hit from behind & his car was totaled. luckily he was not hurt.

The speeder's ins co covered what they thought the car was worth.

It is only 1/2 of what my boy had into the car.

he was stranded out of town & missed days of work due to this

he is from ny

the accident was in vermont

Are there any legal remedies?
