Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

Can a buyer postpone a closing without warning?

We sold our home in NY and the buyer postponed the closing without warning. We almost lost our new home because of that. Is the buyer required to give the seller--name removed--timely notice if they want to postpone the closing?
