Property disposal

If a person needs to go to a nursing home/senior residence home and currently owns the house they live in, are they required to sell the property before being considered eligible for the nursing home/senior residence?

Re: Property disposal

You are not compelled to sell the house. However, if you try to obtain Medicaid, this could be a disqualifying asset. You do not say if you are married, if the house is occupied by your spouse and/or children? This may be a problem down the road if you need Medicaid assistance. I suggest you speak with a local Elder Law attorney familiar with Medicaid matters, who may be able to help you plan for this.
