Renting part of the house

If I have legal one-family house, am I allowed to rent one of the floors or basement to someone?

Any rental of "a part" would, at a minimum, violate the building code. In addition to possible local fines, the LL of an illegal apartment may be prohibited for suing for rent. A possible exception would be a roommate type arrangemnent where the renter shares the entire house.
