Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

I was stopped today and the cop didn't give me the ticket with my information instead he gave it to my passenger. Can they do that? I thought the ticket had to be given to me as the driver.

Sometimes a passenger can be ticketed, for instance, an adult in the front seat can be tickets for not wearing a seat belt.

If the officer wrote the ticket with your information and served it on your passenger instead, that is invalid service as the ticket needs to be served on you. Unfortunately, even if the ticket is dismissed for invalid service, the officer can re-serve the ticket on you.
