Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

Time limits, for court responses.

I was issued 2 traffic tickets on 2/4/02. I pleaded not guilty by mail and sent them in regular US mail on 2/14, my court date was to be 2/17. I was never notified of a date to appear. I phoned the court on 3/30 and was told a date would be set and I would be notified. Today is 4/27/02 and I have not heard and I was wondering if my right to a fair and speedy trail has been violated and ig I can then have these tickets dismissed for that reason?

In general, there is no right to a "fast and speedy trial" with respect to traffic tickets. That right is generally reserved for felony criminal charges

Don't count on it. Generally the courts are not held to a speedy trial standard in vehicle and traffic cases. It is not unusual for an appearance on a ticket to be delayed even up to a year. Your initial date was considered a "control date" - and upon your plea of not guilty you were put into the sequence for an appearance in the court itself. Don't be surprised if that takes awhile. Good luck.
