Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

I gave a friend money for repairs on her house because her house was not up to building code in New York City. Some repairs were started. I have all receipts and proof that money was withdrawn for this purpose. The work was started before the contract was drawn up. The day before the contract was to be drawn up the person died suddenly. How do I go about recouperating the money i already put into the house? Am i able to sue the estate for the money or do i have to put a lien on the house? I also have proof that the person had no other avenue to finance the repairs but through me.

File a claim with the estate. They may take the position that the money was a gift unless you have some written evidence that this was in fact, a loan.
