Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

A house left to us in a will

A house was left to my husband and I in a will. My foster father who lived with us in this same house passed away 2 years ago this month. Prior to his death my family and I took care of him for 81/2 years. We finally went and signed the deed for the house about 2 weeks ago. The attorney for the estate also handed us a bill for the back taxes on the house 2 years worth which are way past over due and need to be paid by the end of this month. In my possion I also have a check from the decease for $7750.00 that was given to me 4 days before he died. I show the executer of the estate the check at the time of his death and they assured us the would take care of it. This has yet to be cashed. Please give us some advise we are unsure what to do from here.

Re: A house left to us in a will

A check dated over 2 years ago is "stale" and the banks will not honor it(cash it).

Not sure I understand when you say "we just went and signed the deed for the house" as only the Executor would sign the deed conveying the house to you and your husband.
