if spouse dies, i am responsible for a loan she took out that i was not aware of? the loan was solely in her name and she paid out of her account. my name appears nowhere on transaction

The surviving spouse is not personally liable, but her estate is responsible to see the loan is repaid, if there are suffiucient assets to cover it. If the surviving spouse is the estate representative, he has the responsibility in this capacity to see all debts are repaid.
