Legal Question in Workers Comp in New York

I've worked swing shift for 7 years now, a lot of times working 12 days in a row with only 2 days off before rotating to the next shift. And frankly, it's been taking it's toll. Lack of sleep is causing me to mentally and physically break down. I've been depressed for years now, and my social/family life has been in shambles. Suicide is a pretty normal thought for my mind to wander to. I've read that shift work can lead to sleeping disorders, and those in turn can lead to other detrimental effects(many of which I have been experiencing). Now, I knew going into this job that I would be required to work odd, rotating hours, but I was unaware of the negative effects this could cause in my life. My question is concerning employer accountability. Is the employer responsible for knowing the health risks involved with working shift work, and then providing that information to it's employees prior to hiring them(or ever)?
