Legal Question in Appeals and Writs in North Carolina

I am considering opening a new business that will include professionally preparing documents that will already be written by inmates. Basically transcribing and re-writing documents then supplying them to their family members w/copies or mailing them out to their perspective places.

My question is, "What kind of statues or laws may already be in place or do I need in order to protecet myself and the company to avoid any law suits.

This is a rather complex question. You probably need to consult with a lawyer in your area to discuss this in further detail. The nature of the document being prepared might have some relevance here. For example, prisoners often file lawsuits, and you would have to consider whether your conduct might constitute the unauthorized practice of law. If the inmates are violating copyright laws, then that might have further implications. This could implicate laws of defamation as well (if e.g. the prisoners are writing false things about real people). There are some disclaimers and "hold harmless" agreements that a business can sometimes use to protect itself, as well as of course purchasing a comprehensive insurance policy. In view of the numerous types of risks that could be raised here, you probably need to provide more information to a lawyer and obtain more detailed guidance in this matter.
