Legal Question in Criminal Law in North Carolina

I filed asault charges because I was slapped across the face. Why do I need a lawyer? Doesn't the appoint one to me if I am the victim?

Who says you need a lawyer? The assistant district attorney prosecutes the charge on your behalf.
