The first procedural step is filing a charge of discrimination with the EEOC. The website www.eeoc.gov has a lot of information about local offices and how to file a charge. The charge must be filed within 180 days of the alleged discriminatory action. If, after doing an investigation, the EEOC is not able to resolve the case, it will issue you a right-to-sue letter, which gives you a 90-day period during which to file the lawsuit in court.
