Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

child support

actually, I have 2 questions. i am having a child with a guy whom i will not be having a future relationship with. first of all, i was told by a friend that in order for me to collect child support the child has to be given his last name at birth? i would prefer not to, and give it my last name. secondly, how quickly after a child is born can i file to get child support? how long should i expect before it kicks in?

Re: child support

The baby does not have to have the father's name in order for you to obtain support. You can file for child support as soon as the baby is born. If you obtain state/county services in connection with your child's support, i.e. WIC, medical, etc, your case will be designated as a title IV (4)matter, in which case child support enforcement will obtain child support for you. In other words, if the state has to help provide some services in connection with the birth and raising your child, the state will go after the father to provide support.
