Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

If you own a home and you let family members stay with you for several years (rent-free, no bills paid ever), and you want them to move out, do you need to give them a notice or do they need to move out when told?

If there is no lease either verbal or written then you have to tell them to get out and if they do not, you simply call law enforcement to come arrest them for trespass. Of course if you family members are smart they will claim there is a verbal lease (whether there actually is one or not) and odds are law enforcement will tell you it is civil matter and you will have to go through the eviction process. This is of course if you want to limit yourself to your legal options. I personally would just physically toss them out of my house myself and risk the potential legal consequences but that is not a good idea if you want to do things 'correctly'.
