Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

Do we need a lawyer.....

My husband and I have been asked if we would like to adopt a baby that a friend knows that she cannot keep. We would love to have this child our question is do we have to go through the same processes that a normal adoptive parents go through as well as needing a lawyer or can she sign the baby directly over to us at birth.
