In responsive pleadings what are the differences between a answer to a complaint and a reply to a complaint?

Technically speaking, the "responsive pleading" that is filed in response to the Complaint is the Answer. A "reply" is the document that the complainer (i.e. Plaintiff) would file in response to the Answer. In practice, filing a "reply" is rare.
