Hi. If you feel that you personally have been persecuted in the past or that you will be persecuted in the future by the Russian government if you return to Crimea, then you could file for asylum. In many cases, civil unrest does not rise to the level of persecution or permit a finding of asylum. Many times we advise clients similar to you to remain on the H-1B and stay the course in search of employment based permanent resident status. This is usually a more pragmatic approach. However, if your factual scenario lends itself to an asylum case, then you should file it. Tell your story to several different immigration lawyers and listen to all of them. Then make a conscious decision as to which path you'll take.
