Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in North Carolina

Wife was in a lease with an apt complex three years ago. She was asked to leave the complex due to her dog. She signed documents showing that the management requested for her to leave and that she was allowed early termination of her lease. 3 years later now she receives a letter asking for the remainder of the lease money. She called them and they stated that yes the management of the complex agreed to let her break the lease but the owner of the complex is now going through old files and they don't agree with the decision that the management had made. Therefore the owner of the complex then filed an eviction notice and back dated it 3 years back and then sent letter demanding the money. Is this for real?? Can this really be done?? Since the management of the complex made the contract, can the owner really come back three years later and say they don't agree?

I would consult with an attorney. From the facts as you have given, this is ridiculous. A strongly worded letter might do the trick and if this had happened to me personally, I would be bringing a lawsuit if I didn't get satisfaction from the letter.
