Legal Question in Medical Malpractice in North Carolina

Infection after removal of a bone tumor.

My wife had a tumor removed from her pelvic bone using a microwave probe, one day after being home the insertion site started oozing puss, the doctor was contacted and he stated that this was normal. After two more days and no sign of the puss stopping we addmited her to the local emergency room, here it was determined that the site where the probe went in was infected and a 6 inch long incision was made to stop the infection and left open to heal from the inside out. A home health nurse came every day to clean it out which was very painfull for my wife. My wife had this done in June 99. She died from cancer in Dec.99 and now the provider is pressuring me to pay the remaing balance of the medical bill which i feel i don't owe because of the pain they caused her. What are my options?
