Legal Question in Real Estate Law in North Carolina

I'm looking to get some advice. I bought a car in 2008, wrecked it, parked it at a friends house, deployed, and came back to no car. I was told it was towed, however I can't find it. I have been making monthly payments on it since 2008 and I'm tired of making payments for a vehicle I DON'T HAVE. Is there a solution to this problem?

NC DMV may be able to tell you where the car is located.
