Legal Question in Tax Law in North Carolina

My mother passed away recently,she gave my sister a large amount of money before she passed.My sister wants to give me part.We are not sure if she does that ,that either of us will have to pay taxes on it.I am unemployed and that is why my sister wants to give me the money.

I am not a tax lawyer but your sister can gift approximately $13,000 to you tax free each year. If your sister gives you over that amount she would have to pay taxes on that. if any gift taxes are owed, they would be paid by the donor, your sister.

Please have your sister consult her CPA before making any gifts so she does not have any tax consequences.
