Legal Question in Traffic Law in North Carolina

Speeding Ticket in NC

I live in MI & received a speeding ticket in Greenboro, NC (75/60) while on business. This is my first ticket in a long time. If I waive the hearing but provide explanation & pay the fine, is there a chance the infraction will be dropped? If no, will the violation show up on my MI driving record?

No there is very little chance of that. Hire an attorney and you have a decent chance of getting a non moving violation in Guilford County or at least a reduction. Otherwise you will have plead guilty to a 75 in a 60 and that will get sent to your MI DMV presumably raising your insurance.

Re: Speeding Ticket in NC

Most states have reciprocity now, which means an out of state ticket WILL appear on your Michigan record (whereas 15 years ago this was not the case).

You can contact the prosecutor (call the court for his/her info) and ask if he will "amend" the ticket to a no-point violation, as long as you pay the fine (you always have to pay the fine). I know they do it this way in Michigan - not sure how they handle it in other states.

In Michigan, no-point violations including "impeding traffic" or "blockading traffic" - but each state is different.

If you want to contact a lawyer to take care of it for you, let me know - I have friends that live in NC in the Charlotte area and I can get a name for you - someone cheap.

Always always fight your tickets!

Thanks and good luck.

You can try to negotiate it in NC so it's not reported. It wouldn't hurt to try.
