Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in North Carolina

Hi, my father just died, August 11th, without a will leaving me and my stepmother as closest living relatives. Am I entitled to a portion of his assests or inheritance? Any help would be great, thanks.

Yes you would be an intestate heir and entitled to a portion of his estate. There are some assets that might not pass through the estate such as a home titled in the name of your father and his wife or any other survivorship or payable on death accounts.
