Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in North Carolina

My husband received a bill for a surety bond from a company called The Daily Record from the state of Maryland. His sister named him executor of her estate befor she died and he received s small settlement on her behalf from a lawsuit because of asbestos exposure. M question is what exactly if a surety bond and is he responsible for paying this bill?

You need to ask a Maryland attorney. If the sister died in Maryland then that is where her estate would be probated and even if she owned nothing, she still had the settlement so that would have to go through her estate to her named beneficiaries or heirs. I suggest that your husband first talk with the register of wills in Maryland to see exactly what needs to be done.

I am not at all clear why a bond is required unless the will made it a requirement or because state law mandates it. If a bond is required, then it would be paid for out of estate funds if there is an estate.
