Legal Question in Criminal Law in North Dakota

College Student/Drug

College student caught with a insignificant amount of ''weed'' (until I find the correct spelling for it)and did not receive notice for court date. Missed court date and was escorted from her apartment and booked for missing the court date. Had to pay $200 for bail and reassigned new court date. Told if she did could not prove that she did not receive notice that the penalty would be harsher on the upcoming court date. How much harsher could the fine be? No previous record. Should we get legal counsel. Will this be on a permanent record?

Take a look at the web site www.norml.org for helpful info - including impact on college financial aid if convicted.

I can't comment on much specifically, since you did not put the city and state where this is being prosecuted.

Whatever happens, and has happened, with very rare exception, will result in permanent, public government and court records. This can also affect one's ability to get a desired job or apartment.

If it were me or my daughter in this situation, I would hire a good lawyer to help defend it, and not settle for less than a result were there would be no guilty plea and no conviction.
