why shouldn't a expert witness put his preliminary opinion in writing?

In most jurisdictions, drafts of expert reports are discoverable (though proposed revisions to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure may soon change this rule in federal court). Disclosure of a draft opinion may harm the expert's credibility if his final report includes significant revisions to his original draft opinion.
