Legal Question in Real Estate Law in North Dakota

I was renting an apt for myself, but when I moved out they made me pay for a carpet cleaning which I understand. Now, two months later, they want me to replace the carpet. Should I have to pay for carpets, and why?

Does the rental property still have your deposit? I suppose they could sue you to replace the carpet. Did you ruin the carpet? Dogs/Cats etc...?
