Legal Question in Technology Law in Ohio

cd copying and distribution

I am a high school Bible teacher and we are discussing morals/ethics. The question is.. Is it legal to purchase a music cd then copy it and give it to a friend?

Re: cd copying and distribution

No - it's neither legal nor moral. It is copyright infringement, and it is stealing.

Re: cd copying and distribution

Only if you also either destroy the copy or give it to the same person. The holder of the copyright and anyone he/she/it designates are the only ones allowed to make copies. After all, that is what "copyright" means.

The copyright holder is entitled to be paid for your friend's copy of the CD. Making an extra copy on your own and giving it away would wrongfully deny that payment to the holder of the copyright.
