In Ohio, there are many cases which state that if you want to represent yourself, you can do so, but if you want to represent someone else or a company, then you have to be an attorney. There are some judges who will let corporate representatives speak for the company, but what you can say or do is very limited, even with those judges (they will usually not allow you to cross examine or give opening or closing statements).

If you get a judge who requires that you get an attorney, he or she will usually tell you that you need one and then give you a short continuance to the next trial date to show up with an attorney. But there is no guarantee on that.
