Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Ohio

Can I/how would I fight a "debt" to an apartment complex (they asked me to leave by a certain date and said they wouldn't evict me I was gone by said date but they say I still owe them eight grand) I also want to dispute a verizon debt of 7 grand for internet (i was told over the phone by a verizon employee that the bill would be credited which never happened). Thanks.

In Ohio, if you can show that you and the landlord agreed to a "surrender" of the lease agreement wherein each of you agreed to relieve the other of his/her obligations under the lease, then any lawsuit for unpaid rent could be fought on the merits against the landlord. However if a third party debt collector is involved, and you dispute the debt with that debt collector in writing and they continue to bug you about it, then there may be a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act by the collector.

As for the Verizon bill, without being able to see the contract upon which the 7,000 was allegedly incurred, I can't really speak to your chances there. However, if the usage of the phone was for personal use, then if the Verizon rep misrepresented something to you about the transaction, you may have a claim for relief under Ohio's Consumer Sales Practices Act.
