Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Ohio

suspended tags and liscince

I go to court on Thursday because I was pulled over due to having expired tags and a suspended liscence. What can I expect to happen and do I need a lawyer?

Sadly, the court system, in many jurisdictions, creates and defines a parallel universe, or alternate reality, with complex rules and unusual language. As a general rule, if you find yourself in a situation where you are being compelled to go to Court (or where you are pursuing a claim which may require you to file suit) YOU ARE BEST ADVISED TO RETAIN AN ATTORNEY.

On the traffic charges you mention, some courts will impose maximum penalties to unrepresented defendants. Some courts take a more businesslike view and impose a modest fine and costs (the costs often exceed the fine)on condition that the defendant bring in a valid license and proof of insurance. If you decide to make the first appearance on your own, be certain to have proof of insurance and try to have your valid license, and registration, with you. Show them to the bailiff and ask if you need a lawyer or if the Court will take into account your having now complied with the law. (NOTE: You didn't mention the reason and terms of your license suspension. Was it imposed by a Court, or the State? Were you aware of it? Is there jail time being held over you for an earlier offense?) Good luck.

The most important thing is to get your license back. If you show up to court at some future point with your license, they will amend the charge. Ask for a continuance so that you can.
