I am a u s citizen can I sponsor a friend to get a green card?

No, you can't.

As a US citizen, you can petition for a Green card only a spouse, parents, children, siblings and a fiance (for a Fiance visa).

You can help someone to "sponsor" a foreign relative by taking financial responsibility (under the Affidavit of Support).
