Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Ohio

Determining Builder

I'd like to find out who built a home we're considering buying. It was built in 2000 and the Auditor's web site is proving no help.

Thanks much.

Re: Determining Builder

Dear Inquirer: The Building Department of the municipality wherein the house you are considering is located, should have a set of Building Cards or records for the specific house, including all approvals and violations. It is a matter of public record and should be available for the asking, with perhaps a modest fee for copying the card.

The Department may not have retained the actual approval set of drawings ("plans") or prints for the residence, but the name of the builder should be on the building card record indicating who applied for and who paid for the building permit.

Good luck!

Be very careful to have the home inspected and, above all, be extremely wary of any Offer to Purchase or Purechase Agreement which includes the term "AS IS". Contact Counsel to advise and guide you.

Sincerely,

J. Norman Stark
