Legal Question in Tax Law in Ohio

I received a letter on law office letterhead stating that I should send payment to Ohio Treasurer Of State. It states that a lien has been filed against me by the Ohio Attorney General's office-

But I have not received anything from the state of Ohio or had any audits or problems with my state tax return.

This form is signed by someone claiming to be a legal assistant.

This sounds like a scam to me, I would expect the state of Ohio to have their own attorneys.

Is there someplace that I can report these people to?

Call the Ohio Attorney General's Office Revenue Recovery (also called Collections Enforcement) Section to verify.

By law, state agencies turn their collections over to the Ohio Attorney General's Office, which in turn uses 3rd-party law firms (private counsel) to collect the debt. The 3rd party firms bid for the right to collect the revenue. The AG's Office wins, because they get a guaranteed income stream from these 3rd party collectors while ridding themselves of the risk and cost that is associated with collecting debt.

It may be possible you owe a state agency money. Call the AG's Office to find out.
