Financial responibility for sister medical bills

My sister is unemployed due to a recent move and has no health insurance. She has been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and I am helping her enroll in medicaid. Since we are both listed on the deed to our home can I be held responsible for her medical bills? Can I lose my home?

Re: Financial responibility for sister medical bills

You cannot be held responsible for your sisters medical bills as long as you do not sign anything that would indicate you are responsible.

If your sister is a joint owner of the real estate then this could cause some complications when applying for medicaid and if she qualifies for medicaid the state will attempt to recover their costs and may put a lien on the house. You should talk to an attorney who knows the medicaid laws before you apply for medicaid.
