Unfortunately, a few courts in Oklahoma are kangaroo courts. I have been shocked to be in these courts and see the judge allow people to plead guilty to marijuana and DUI and other serious misdemeanors at the first court date. This is before the defendant was given the opportunity to consult with an attorney and before the defendant was given the opportunity to read police reports and before anyone explains the consequences of the conviction. If he is in such a court, he needs to plead Not Guilty and tell the court he needs time to get an attorney. Most courts in Oklahoma, such as Tulsa County, will automatically enter a plea of Not Guilty for the defendant and tell the defendant to get an attorney for all crimes other than minor traffic violations and public intoxication.
