Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Oklahoma

turning off electricty

I sold my home in Oklahoma to my neice, she did not have the money to pay to put the electric in her name, she was supposed to put it in her name when her taxes came in, she never did, she is now late every month, and I just found out today the electric was turned off, and then paid and the electric company turned it back on,. I'm afraid that I will be stuck paying the bill, do I have to give her notice that I am turning off the service to get my name off of the service. the company will not transfer it to her name, it has to be shut off and then turned back on.

Re: turning off electricty

As a previous owner who sold the property, you no longer have the obligation to pay this bill. Particularly, after the deed was tranferred to the new owner. And you should have immediately and this service discontinued. The information you received was correct. You must immediately taken any necessary action to transferred this account or have these services shut-off and discontinued. It is now the new owner's obligation; this is in spite of the fact that this is a relative. Contingencies do not apply in this situation. The right and title to the new home includes utility cost and any other cost associated with it. And, it is recommended that you remove you name from this service immediately.
