Legal Question in Technology Law in Oregon

Is it legal to compile a list of someone's else free software?

I am a web site owner. My product is compilation of free software for the homeschool market.

If I list a program of someone else's design, give them full credit, direct my traffic to their site, use their words in describing the software, is this legal?

I do not profit directly from their software. I receive no benefit from them at all. I do, however, profit from collecting all the free resources in one place, and selling the ease in which a person my locate the software of their need.

Thank you.

On the surface of your question, which is whether you may compile a list of software and (for example) collect profit from advertiser banners, the answer is absolutely. There are thousands of sites doing this!

However,a problem comes up in using their words to describe their product. You would be much better off doing your own description, but if all you borrow is a small part of their description, that should be ok under fair use.
