Do I have to return the ring if he called of the engagement

No, at least not legally.

But on the basis of ethics, decency, honesty, reasonableness and every other ethical and moral standard your mother tried to instill in you since childhood (and that you would expect from your own children in the future) returning the ring is the RIGHT thing to do.

How greedy and selfish you must be to even THINK of keeping the ring.

Keep in mind that there are many things we do in life, not because of any legal requirement but simply because it is the RIGHT thing to do.

(If you lose your purse, with money, credit cards, license, etc., and I find it in the street, am I LEGALLY required to call you and let you know so you come come and retrieve it? No. But beyond the legal question, the more important question is: What is RIGHT thing to do? Most people would have the moral decency to get in touch with you arrange to you to get the purse back.)
