Re: Bankruptcy after Divorce

For more than a year, the U.S. Trustee's office has required that all debtors provide proof of their identity and social security number. That requirement is to combat the very concern you have.

Before a debtor is allowed to proceed with a Meeting of Creditors, a significant event in a bankruptcy case, he must provide a photo I.D. and a social security or some other independent verification that the social security number used on the petition is actually his.

If you have reason to think he may be using your number, you should call an attorney who can access the court records and follow up with the U.S. Trustee. I can perform that service, so feel free to call or E-mail me on a free initial basis.
