Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Pennsylvania

Legality of not returning an engagement ring

I have a good friend who got involved with a man from Ireland and in the matter of a few months they were sending love letters back and forth. This man told her how much he loved her and wanted to spend his life with her and even called her his fiance. This man came to the states to spend a week with my frined and before he left bought her a diamond ring ( but did not ask her to marry him ). When he returned to Ireland, a week later he told her he no longer felt the same and didn't love her and wanted the ring back. I told her after all of the promises he made and the grief he put her through and since he called off the relationship that she should simply consider it a gift and not return it or give him money for it, now he tells her he is coming to the states with a lawyer to demand the money. My question is: does she have an obligation to pay him anything ?

Thanks for your response.

Best Regards,

Jim

Re: Legality of not returning an engagement ring

It sounds like a gift to me. He gave her a ring, and there were no promises to marry. So, it wasn't in exchange for a promise. Then, further on her behalf,he broke off the relationship. If you are telling me all of the facts, she doesn't have to return the ring.

He may be showing up with some lawyer from Ireland, but all of this happened in Pennsylvania, so Irish law wouldn't apply anyway.
