Legal Question in Technology Law in Pennsylvania

digital media copyright laws

The retail business has been allowing customers to return digital movies and music in exchange for another recording. I thought that there was a limit or guidelines for this. Please tell me when I approve this exchange if I am breaking the law.

Re: digital media copyright laws

It's not clear what you mean by your question. If they are legitimately returning physical copies of DVDs or CDs that have been purchased, there would seem to be no problem.

If the customer is making an illegal copy and then returning the original, the customer is violating copyright laws.

If the retailer is knowingly participating in a scheme to allow illegal activity, they may be at risk of lawsuits for contributory infringement of copyrights.
