Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Pennsylvania

debt collections

I have an old credit card debt that I havent heard from in years. Suddenly I am getting 10 phone calls a day from a collection agency and a letter from them stating I owe $4000.00. The acual puchases on that card were about $700.00. I fell behind on payments and with the late fees it went way out of my ability to pay. Is there a statue of limitations on collecting a debt? What can I do?

Re: debt collections

If what you say about getting 10 calls a day is correct you may be able to pursue the creditor under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. You may also have a defense to the debt under the statute of limitations. Your zip code indicates that you are from the Johnstown area. I may be able to help you with this. Give my office a call on Monday.
