Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Pennsylvania

Deceased husband credit card debt

I was an authorized user on husbands credit cards. Am I responsible for outstanding balances? These were NOT joint accounts. He left no estate, as property, bank accounts and home were in both names. There is a small insurance policy, enough to pay burial expenses with a little left over. When I notified the companies, the first question asked was ''what county do you live in?'' Can a lien be placed against my home and can bank accounts be frozen?

Re: Deceased husband credit card debt

Yes. Generally a wife is responsible for her husband's debts. Upon death the properties held as joint tenants with right of survivorship automatically pass to the survivor. But thos properties are also part of the estate. Such debts will be able to attach joint bank accounts and often any benefits, such as federal death benefits or some insurance proceeds.

Based on the little information you provided, yes, you can be held responsible for the credit card debt, or any other valid debt. Just make certain to verify the balances and all charges before agreeing to pay anything.
