Legal Question in Criminal Law in Pennsylvania

accused of stealing money

My employer is accusing me of stealing $300 cash from a bank deposit I made for him. I did not steal it but have no way of prooving it. I've been terminated and he had a letter sent via certified mail from his attorney demanding I pay it back or legal (criminal or civil) action will be taken. If I pay it just because I'm scared of legal action, I feel like I'm admitting to stealing it. On the other hand, I just want this to go away because it's killing me that I cannot prove that I didn't steal it. I compare it to standing in the middle of a crowded room screaming and nobody can hear me. I had been at this job for over 4 1/2 years, and never gave him any reason to think that I would do anything like this. I have been a model employee, coming in and working for others, coming in and training new employees, and just plain being there whenever he needed me. The only explanation for the missing money is the bank teller. I gave her the deposit ticket along with the carbon. When we received a copy of the original slip from the bank, the cash was crossed out, but not on the copy she gave back to me. I guess he thinks I crossed of the cash on the original before giving the slip to the teller. I swear I did not take the money!

Re: accused of stealing money

The expense and risk involved make it that you would be best be served by negotiating a civil settlement. By th terms it coulkd state that the employer is whole and that you do not admit taking the money. I have negotiated similar agreements. I offer free consultations.
