what is the important distinction between arrest and detainment of a customer suspected of shoplifting?

Only one distinction? The important one? Without facts I will guess that (since it's a civil litigation question) the retailer gets a certain degree of immunity from suit if its employee or agent detains (or catches ahold of) a suspected shoplifter and uses a light and limited touch.
