am i legally responsible for a chilsd school fines even though the child is not mine in any legal way and i am no longer with his mother

Read the papers/contract that you signed when the child was enrolled. Is your name on the sheet? Were you listed as a responsible party? If so, then you might be stuck, although, the mother of the child may be responsible. You could see if the school will try to collect first from the mother, but if you signed the papers, that means there is something called "joint and several liability." What this means is that the school can collect from you or the mother. If you have money, the school may go after you first. If that occurs, you will have to pay and then go after the mother.

Or you can refuse to pay and let the school take whatever action they want. They may be able to list this as a bad debt on your credit report or sue you for it. It depends on how much is owed and whether you have good credit or not that you want to protect. I would not let my otherwise good credit get screwed up for a small sum, but you need to assess the risks of not paying.
