My family operates a non-profit organization(softball) should we have players sign a waiver in case they get hurt?We looked into insurance and it is to expensive

If insurance is too expensive, then you can't afford to run a youth sports program. I was president of a local Little League and we got insurance through the parent organization, it wasn't that expensive. You need to adjust fees to cover the cost of insurance. In addition, we needed proof of insurance to have the township's permission to use the fields. Any school, park, or whatever is likely to require that.

A waiver might or might not be effective, and even if it is, you can still get sued and you're going to have to pay a lawyer to raise the waiver defense.

Worse, if a waiver works, it will leave an injured player uncompensated, even if a coach was negligent.
